My Days at Maybury

I was a patient at maybury in the late 60's..I remember going to school and taking meds...I even put on a play for the patients and the staff..those days were hard, because I was away from my family...I made the newspaper for riding on a sleigh with Christmas Carol. Those kinds of things made it a little better. I wish I could get the article..but I can't find it.

Thank you for sharing! If you would like to submit your story I would be more than happy to add it to the story page. This is a great place for many past patients to come together.

Re: My Days at Maybury

I fell in love with the love of my life at Maybury on Saturday, November the 15, 1980. It was our first kiss. I was facing west, and she was facing east. I promised her on that day, at that moment that I wouldn't kiss her for too long... but that kiss never ended...for me. I am not her soulmate, but she turned out to be mine. I have carried this torch since. When I die, I want my ashes dropped from a private plane over these grounds, as Maybury represents the happiest moment of my life.

Re: My Days at Maybury

Are any of the people listed at the Maybury Sanitorium from the 1930 census, still living? I am interested in a Bernice Kuliezka who is listed as being born in 1926. I am looking for my mothers youngest sister, Bernice June Foster, born 9-27-1926. She was given away as a baby never to be found again. Anyone have any ideas?

That is the sweetest story to come out of Maybury. Thank you for sharing! It is priceless to have some bright light shine on what was such a dark time for so many.

Re: My Days at Maybury

My husband recently passed away from cancer at age 64. His parents met and fell in love at Maybury. They married when they both were released. It was during WWII. Their names were Carl Colombo and Irene Antonow. I knew the story, but never knew the name of this place until yesterday while looking for something in an old file. I wish I knew more about their stay. Thank you for the pictures, I can only imagine what it must have been like for the two of them back then. It makes me feel more connected to them somehow. God bless you.
